Sue
Williams and Kathryn Dietz formed Ambrica Productions in 1986 to develop
and produce documentaries of international scope and interest.
Their
first project was the epic CHINA: A Century of Revolution,
three two-hour films for PBS that explored the turbulent social and political
history of 20th century China.
The series began with CHINA
IN REVOLUTION, which covered the early years of the Chinese republic
from 1911 to 1949.
It continued with THE
MAO YEARS, examining the tumultuous years of Mao Zedong's rule,
from 1949 to 1976.
BORN UNDER THE RED
FLAG completed the trilogy with an exploration of the years of reform
under Deng Xiaoping, from 1976 to 1997.
All three films have been broadcast
nationally on PBS to widespread critical acclaim and are in educational,
home video and international distribution. They have been broadcast
in over 25 countries.
The
company began portrait film making in its critically acclaimed biography
of ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. This 2½-hour documentary special aired as part of the PBS series American Experience
in January 2000 and was one of its highest rated programs ever.
CHINA
IN THE RED, a two hour special which explored the human cost of
the economic reforms sweeping China today by following ten families
over a four year period. It aired on the PBS series FRONTLINE in February
2003.
Ambrica's documentary TIME OF FEAR, about Japanese American internment in Arkansas during World War II, was broadcast on national PBS in May 2005.
Ambrica also produced MARY PICKFORD for American Experience, a 90- minute portrait of the life and art of the world's first super-star and one the most powerful women in Hollywood history. It was broadcast on PBS in April 2005.
